The Protection That Works After Contact
Photo eyes stop the door before it reaches you. The force limit is the second protection, and it works the other way round: the door touches something, senses the resistance, and reverses. UL 325 asks for both, because either one can be defeated by circumstance. Something can slide under the beam after the door has passed it. Something can sit below the beam entirely.
The way you measure the second one is a length of 2x4 laid flat on the floor, right where the bottom of the door lands. Flat, not on edge, so the door meets it at about an inch and a half. Close the door with the opener and watch. It should touch the wood and go straight back up. If it settles onto the board and keeps pushing, or if it stops and sits there, the down force is set too high and needs adjusting.
How Often
Monthly. It takes less than a minute and it is the only test that tells you anything about how hard your door is prepared to push. Most manufacturers say the same thing in the manual, and almost nobody does it, which is why we bring a board to every job.
Do the photo eye check on the same day. Start the door closing and pass something through the beam, ideally an object rather than your arm, and confirm it reverses. Two tests, same minute, once a month.
Why Force Gets Wound Up
Almost every over-forced door we find got that way honestly. The door started binding, or the springs lost tension and it got heavy, and it began stopping partway or refusing to close. Turning up the down force made the symptom go away.
That is the wrong order and it matters. Force should be the last thing set, after the mechanical problem is fixed, because a correctly balanced door needs very little force to close. So the sequence we work in is this:
- Balance first. Release the opener, lift the door by hand to halfway and let go. It should stay roughly where you put it. If it drops or flies up, the springs are wrong and no force setting will make that safe.
- Track and rollers next. A bent track, a seized roller or a twisted section makes the door fight its way down, and the opener reads that fight as an obstruction.
- Force last. Set to the minimum that closes the door reliably. Then test it with the board and record the result.
California SB-969 and the Battery
Since 1 July 2019, California has required that residential garage door openers sold or installed in the state include a battery backup. It is a state rule on top of the federal safety standard and it exists for a specific reason.
During wildfire evacuations, people were unable to get vehicles out of attached garages. The power was cut, the opener was dead, and either they did not know about the emergency release cord or they could not operate the door by hand once it was disconnected, which is a real problem with a heavy double door or with anyone who is not strong enough to lift it. The battery keeps the opener working through an outage so the door goes up the way it always does.
If your opener went in after that date and has no backup battery, it did not meet the requirement. We fit compliant units, test them by pulling the power and cycling the door on battery alone, and check that the backup actually holds a charge rather than simply beeping.
The Release Cord
While we are there we show whoever uses the garage where the red release cord is, how to pull it, and how to re-engage the trolley afterwards. It is a thirty second demonstration and a surprising number of households have never had it. Pull it only with the door fully closed, because releasing a partly open door on weak springs drops it.
What You Get Written Down
A note of the measured photo eye height, the result of the board test, whether the balance passed, and whether a backup battery is present and holding. If something failed we tell you what it costs to put right and what happens if you leave it. There is work on a garage door that can honestly wait, and we will say so. Entrapment protection is not in that category.
